Our word “personality” is derived from the Latin per-sona (person) which means “through a mask.” The idea is the real self is either non-existing or not-manifesting.
Circumstances permit us to fill certain roles. Thus I have been a leprechaun & a Dennis-the-Menace, a dolt, a failure, an intellectual. None of these reflect reality. They are all roles which we assume for a time.
